What is Seated massage?

Seated massage is a particular form of massage that is mainly characterised by the chair used. As you can see in the picture the chair is purposely created to allow you to fall into a relaxed and supported position and allows the therapist access to the main areas of stress and tension for office workers.

It is beneficial in that you and your weight are fully supported in a comfortable position. Another bonus to a lot of people is that this type of massage can be received while wearing clothes. Thin clothing is preferred, but it takes away that uncomfortable feeling of getting undressed at work.

The type of massage you are likely to receive will depend on your therapist. Some therapists will utilise other techniques they are trained in such as acupressure, Indian head massage or shiatsu. These all have similar aims to reduce pain, stress and tension and improve wellbeing and movement.

How is seated massage beneficial?

It creates a sense of connection, safety, rest and relaxation which increases levels of oxytocin. This hormone increases the body’s sense of wellbeing, happiness and safety. When oxytocin increases, our stress hormone cortisol tends to reduce, so our anxious and stress feelings also reduce. Once this happens our bodies can rebalance into a state of homeostasis or stability.

From a physiological point of view, seated massage can ease out tension in the common tension areas for office workers.  The therapist can access the back, neck and shoulders while you are supported on the chair. It also makes access to the chest area to stretch and mobilise the upper body easier. An effective seated massage can be as short as 20 minutes making it ideal to fit into a work or lunch break.
